A Word From Tammy's Mom

Our world was shattered on January 29, 2019, when we received notice that our oldest daughter, Tammy, was murdered by her partner. We knew that she planned to leave him, and we had even asked if she felt unsafe, but she was sure she was fine as he didn’t stay in her house any longer. We didn’t find out until after her death, that her friends and co-workers were having the same thoughts and fears, and had voiced them to her as well. She felt she could control the situation even though her murderer hadn’t been able to hold a job for over 2 years, and was drinking and doing drugs. She provided for her children and her home, and often voiced that she intended her home to be a safe and loving place for her children to live.

Tammy was a very proud, hard-working woman. She was beautiful, caring and compassionate. She was the mother of two beautiful children, Dane and Josie, who at the time of her death were 3 and 1-year olds. Tammy was successful in her career as a Professor of Radiology at Sask Polytechnic. She enjoyed helping others, which was evident with her students and the help she gave them to succeed. She was closely connected with her family and extended family and spent time with them whenever she could. She enjoyed being active with indoor and outdoor sports, but her passion was hockey, and she played it well. She was a great hunter and fisherwoman, who enjoyed being out in nature, and considered it a successful hunt even if she didn’t bring home any meat.

The night that Tammy was murdered, she allowed him into her house to spend time with the children, and because her child was unwell and she herself was tired, she allowed him to stay. She went to bed while he was in her house, so we truly believe she had no idea what he was capable of. There is nothing that can bring Tammy back, but we pray that others can see the signs, get help, and stay safe. Women and mothers are vulnerable. Violence and death happen all too often. There was a statement and theme that we heard several times, “If I can’t have the children, neither can she.” No family should have to go through this kind of pain.

Tammy was a beautiful soul, inside and out. We miss her every day. Dane and Josie miss her and wonder about her. Their lives were turned upside down, and they will feel the effects of their mother’s death and their father’s absence, for their lifetime.
